Offensive tackle JC Latham was the first Alabama player selected in Thursday's NFL draft, and Nick Saban could barely contain his excitement.

Saban made his ESPN debut on ABC's coverage of the 2024 NFL draft, and was positively beaming when Latham was selected No. 7 overall by the Tennessee Titans. Asked why he was so happy, Saban replied "I just love it when our guys get picked, man," before providing a breakdown of Latham as an NFL prospect.

"JC played great ball for us, man," Saban said. "He was a leader on our team. But you talk about being physical and dominate the line of scrimmage, I mean, this guy is as powerful as anybody as we've ever had. When he gets his hands on you, you've had it.

"And a fine young man. Really, everybody on the team loves the guy. I'm so happy for him and his family and … when it's your guys and you know it's their dream, it just makes you feel so great."

Latham, who grew up in Wisconsin but finished high school at IMG Academy, was a five-star recruit in Alabama's 2021 signing class. He started the last two seasons at right tackle, and was a first-team All-SEC pick and a second-team All-American in 2023.

Saban said Latham came to Alabama as a strong run-blocker, but steadily improved in pass-protection during his college career. That physical nature should translate to the NFL, he said.

"If you look at his game … and the emotional maturity, being consistent in performance and staying focused, not getting penalties," Saban said. "… This guy's powerful, he was a really good pass (protection) guy. … I'm telling you, if you want to be a trendsetter, this guy will set the trend for you of being a physical football team on the line."

One other stat of note, Latham was the 50th Alabama player selected in the first round under Saban. He also made it 16 straight years with a first-round pick for the Crimson Tide, dating back to 2009.
