BOSTON -- Red Sox rookie reliever Garrett Whitlock left Sunday's game in the seventh inning with right pectoral tightness, according to the team. It's unclear if Whitlock will need to miss any time with the injury.

"We'll know more tomorrow, obviously, with the off day," said Sox manager Alex Cora. "It's too soon to know what's going on. We'll know a little bit more tomorrow."

Whitlock pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief of Nathan Eovaldi then issued a leadoff walk to Cedric Mullins to start the seventh inning. Third baseman Rafael Devers noticed something was amiss with Whitlock and motioned to Cora, who then visited the mound with a team trainer. After a brief conversation, Whitlock left the game.

Whitlock was relieved by Hirokazu Sawamura, who walked the first two batters he faced then allowed a three-run double to Trey Mancini that gave the Orioles a 6-5 lead. Boston scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to win, 8-6, and finish off a three-game sweep.

Whitlock owns a 1.99 ERA and has recorded 79 strikeouts in 71 ⅔ innings for the Red Sox this season. He has recently assumed a high-leverage role in the back end of Boston's bullpen with Matt Barnes missing time after testing positive for COVID-19.
