The Palestinian movement Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, launched a series of coordinated attacks in southern Israel on October 7, 2023. More than 1,100 Israelis or dual nationals were killed and another 240 were taken hostage. The attacks marked the start of a new war between Israel and the Islamist movement. The Gaza Strip has since been under intense bombardment and seen fierce ground fighting. More than half of the enclave's 2.3 million inhabitants have fled southwards, crowding into Rafah at Gaza's southernmost point near the Egyptian border.
