A 'Cyberpunk 2077' Game Of The Year Edition Is Coming

I know, I know, but hold the jokes.

According to a new call with investors, CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kicinski said that Cyberpunk 2077 would eventually get a "Game of the Year" edition. Likely later in 2023, it would seem.

The video game industry has adopted the Game of the Year nomenclature in a weird way over the years. While GOTY is a hotly debated topic every year, about which game was actually the best, in terms of commercial sales, all a "Game of the Year" edition really means is that the studio is releasing the "complete" version of the game will all additions and DLC. And that's the case here:

"It's the natural order of things—it was the same with The Witcher, which after both expansions was finally released as a Game of the Year Edition and has been on the market that way ever since. The same can be expected in this case."

While The Witcher 3 actually was Game of the Year for many when it was released, the idea of Cyberpunk 2077 having a Game of the Year identified attached to it will rankle some, particularly that the first year of release was its roughest, even though it's evolved into an acceptable, even very solid state today, two years later.

But again, this is a common industry thing. I remember reading similar jokes about Far Cry 6 recently releasing a Game of the Year addition, when I don't think that won a single GOTY award anywhere, but it's just about making a complete package with all additions.

In the case of Cyberpunk 2077, what this means is that eventually there will be a version of the game sold that includes the base game and Phantom Liberty packaged together, when at launch, Phantom Liberty will be a sold separate expansion. Probably $30-40 if I had to guess. Oftentimes GOTY editions end up being $60 or so new for the total package, but we'll have to see. It's the benefitting of waiting to play a AAA game for a while, as something like this usually comes around. It feels like Phantom Liberty may be released in later winter/early spring 2023 with the GOTY package maybe around holiday 2023 instead.

Cyberpunk 2077 will only have this singular DLC, not two like The Witcher 3, which was not the original plan, but plans change when have you have to spend a year and a half fixing the base game. But Cyberpunk 2077 has recovered to be in a worthwhile state and a sequel has already been greenlit and announced. There will be plenty of time to catch up before that, however.
