Team Biden's N95 giveaway is — as ever — too little, too late

Yet again, Team Biden is late to the game on a high-profile anti-COVID action. This time, it's a move to give away 400 million N95 masks — mainly after Omicron has peaked.

Masks from the Strategic National Stockpile will be available for pickup at pharmacies and community health centers across the country starting sometime in the next week, though the program won't be fully operational until February.

Omicron has already peaked in these parts, and the rest of America should be there before President Joe Biden's giveaway is in first gear.

It seems the White House belatedly swung into action after the CDC admitted that cloth face masks aren't effective against COVID-19. But that advisory was itself old news; the public-health bureaucracy just cringes from admitting even the obvious.

Not that N95s would've been a great help even weeks ago. As Biden notes, they're "a pain in the neck." They're much harder to breathe through; even doctors don't wear them for long.

This follows a year of Biden being late to react to COVID developments. Time and again he promised to ramp up testing then failed to follow through. Only last week did the administration quietly launch COVIDtests.gov, a site where Americans can finally order free at-home test kits.

Even less serious was his high-profile announcement back in September of a workplace vaccine mandate. He'd previously said — and rightly, as the Supreme Court has now ruled — he lacked the authority for such an order, but still made it the centerpiece of his supposedly big plan.

Even though his administration didn't actually issue it for another two months, and then only to kick in this month.

And don't get us started on this White House's failure to kick public-health bureaucrats out of their ways: If Biden had been president, it would've been Operation Worm Speed.

Joe & Co. have totally earned the failing marks on the pandemic now showing up in every public-opinion poll.
