Turns out the Formula One season might not be the Red Bull coronation parade that everyone expected. Yes, Max Verstappen took pole position for Sunday's Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, but Mercedes have their mojo back and if they can maintain their present improvement trajectory we may yet have a season to relish.

Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, was never likely to break out the champagne after watching George Russell take second place on the grid, with Lewis Hamilton grabbing third, but there was a sense of quiet satisfaction about him after some of the hardest weeks of his nine years in charge of the team.
