A shopkeeper and his mistress accused of hiring a hitman to kill his wife were secretly recorded asking what police "have on us" more than 40 years after the murder, a court was told.

In the summer of 1981 Carol Morgan was subjected to a "sudden and ferocious" attack with an axe or machete in the corner shop she ran with her husband in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

Allen Morgan, 73, and his former mistress, now wife, Margaret Morgan, 75, deny conspiring to murder her so they could start a life together in a case that has remained unsolved for 43 years.
