A man has been arrested in connection with a claim of responsibility by the New IRA for the shooting of detective John Caldwell.

A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said the man was arrested on Saturday morning after officers searched a property in Londonderry.

He was arrested under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and is being questioned at Musgrave Serious Crime Suite.

It comes after a typed message was posted on a wall in the city purportedly from the New IRA claiming responsibility for Mr Caldwell's attempted murder.

Police have said the New IRA is the main line of inquiry in the investigation.

Mr Caldwell was shot on 22 February after coaching a football training session at a sports complex in Omagh.

He was shot in front of his young son as he put footballs into the boot of his car, and he remains critically ill in hospital.
