BANTAMS REACTION: Hughes delighted with fightback in game they had to win

MARK Hughes praised City's energy levels after the comeback win that saw them gain ground on their promotion rivals.

The breathless 3-2 Valley Parade victory over Grimsby lifted the Bantams a place into sixth.

And with other results around them all falling in favour afterwards, the gap to the third automatic spot is down to four points. They are six off second with a game in hand.

City trailed 2-1 at half-time after Alex Gilliead's first goal of the season had been wiped out. But Jamie Walker and Andy Cook netted to end the run of four consecutive draws.

Hughes said: "We got ourselves into a little bit of a pickle to be 2-1 down in a game where we'd started really strongly.

"Going in 2-1 down at half-time was something we didn't credit seeing ourselves in. But that's when you have to show your character.

"You have to roll your sleeves up, stick your chests out and stand up and be counted - all the cliches but that's exactly what we did. I was really proud of the guys today.

"I thought it was a significant performance and result. We all knew the importance of it.

"The energy of the group was really strong and that's what got us over the line.

"We weren't to be denied. We all felt this was a game we needed to win and that's what we were able to do."

Cook's goal was his 23rd in the league - and 26th overall - as he converted a cross from impressive sub Matt Derbyshire nine minutes from time.

"He was getting a little bit frustrated but that's the lot of a striker," added Hughes.

"I know myself that you've got to keep going. You've got to make 10-15 runs just to get one ball.

"When you're a striker, you get the plaudits because you get the opportunity to score the winner.

"All the other runs you have to do before you get that one ball is part and parcel of it. That's the deal you sign up to.

"Sometimes the ones you strike really well the keeper can judge where they are going. But Andy always gets good connection and there's a lot of power behind everything he does.

"He might not get the cleanest of strikes but inevitably because of the power he's got, that will still have enough pace to get past keepers."
