A rise in the number of premium subscribers and a tighter grip on costs has helped Spotify post record quarterly profits.

The music streaming company increased operating income to a record €168 million in the three months between January and March, against a €75 million loss in the previous quarter, but lower than the guide figure of €180 million.

Spotify, which makes its money by carrying adverts and charging subscriptions for users who want to listen to music and podcasts without the interruption of adverts, said the number of its premium subscribers, who account for most revenue, rose by 14 per cent to 239 million, a performance that was in line with expectations.
