Huddersfield 4-2 Boro - Live updates from the John Smith's Stadium

Original source (on modern site) | Article images: [1]

Middlesbrough are looking to keep their automatic promotion hopes on track this afternoon when they take on Huddersfield Town at the John Smith's Stadium.

After a fortnight break for internationals, this is the first of eight final games as they look to chase down Sheffield United to earn their place in next season's Premier League.

They are heavy favourites for this clash in West Yorkshire, but will know only too well that former Boro boss Neil Warnock thrives when the underdog, and he will be out to cause an upset in this one, with his side facing their own battle against relegation.

Can Boro avoid the former-boss banana skin and claim the key three points? We'll be providing live updates below throughout.

FT 4-2KEY EVENT

Full-time: Huddersfield 4-2 Boro

Shocking second half. Defeat for Boro at the John Smith's.

Boro sub

Barlaser on for McNair

84 mins 4-2Craig Johns

Rudoni close

Huddersfield break as Smith's ball to McNair is slack. Rudoni receives well and volleys inches wide of the post.

74 mins 2-4KEY EVENT

Goal: Boro 2-4, Akpom (74 mins)

One back. Trademark. Ryan Giles cross from the left, Akpom with a great dart and rise and then a superb headed finish. I'll reserve hope of a comeback until I see more sign of life.

70 mins 4-1Craig Johns

Confusion over what Boro thought was a goal

It's a bit of goalmouth scramble with Crooks in there. He thinks he's scored in the crowd. The ball does cross the line and the referee blows and appears to give it as Boro all run back into their own half for kick-off. But then the referee awards a free-kick.

67 mins 4-1KEY EVENT

Goal: Huddersfield 4-1, Pearson (67 mins)

A fourth. Dear me. Dreadful. Huddersfield run at Boro's right again and break into the box. It goes across goal and eventually falls kindly for Pearson unmarked at the back post to turn it home.

65 mins 3-1Craig Johns

Double Boro change

McGree and Crooks on for Hackney and Archer

60 mins 3-1Craig Johns

Sheffield United winning

Just to make matters worse...

58 mins 3-1KEY EVENT

GOAL: Huddersfield 3-1, Pearson (58 mins)

Another... What on earth has happened here. Corner from Boro's left is flicked at the front post and Pearson gets what looks like a knee to it and it's into the bottom corner. 3-1.

54 mins 2-1KEY EVENT

GOAL: Huddersfield 2-1, Koroma

Boro behind! Oh dear. Another really good finish, but this has been an awful start to the second half for Boro. Huddersfield break on Boro, work it from right to left where Koroma faces up Smith as he breaks into the box then uses him to disguise his curled effort into the far corner.

46 mins 1-1KEY EVENT

GOAL: Huddersfield 1-1, Ruffels (46 mins)

Huddersfield level 22 seconds after the restart. Ruffels won a 50-50 with Forss out on Boro's right and he cut in from there, evaded about three Boro challenges before producing an excellent finish beyond Steffen.

Here come the players

No changes coming at the break

HT 0-1Craig Johns

First half verdict

Boro needed that breakthrough. They've not always been at their flowing best in that first half but have controlled possession since that early Huddersfield chance. Very much a Warnock side performance that was thwarting Boro, but they were probing away before getting that goal.

HT 0-1Craig Johns

Half-time: Huddersfield 0-1 Boro

Boro lead at the break.

45+ mins 0-1Craig Johns

Sheffield United

HT there and it remains goalless so far.

43 mins 0-1KEY EVENT

GOAL: Boro 1-0, Forss! (43 mins)

Boro lead! They needed that! Brilliant break. Akpom flicks into Ramsey's path and he is brilliant to get away from two players in his own half before splitting the defence with a ball in behind for Archer. He cuts back inside, lays across goal and Forss runs onto it and hammers it home.

40 mins 0-0Craig Johns

Lenihan effort

That's not far wide from the CB. Not the usual suspect to be having a pop from the edge of the box, but it about sums up how much Boro are being allowed to advance up the field, with Huddersfield deep and compact.

38 mins 0-0Craig Johns

Jackson chance

Long ball headed down well by Ward, Jackson runs onto it and hit first time but it's wide.

35 mins 0-0Craig Johns

Sheffield United

Still 0-0 at Carrow Road too. Sheff Utd have just hit the bar.

35 mins 0-0Craig Johns

Another Ramsey effort

He and Archer combine again, this time Ramsey running on to hit one first-time from Archer's lay off. But he leans back and it's high and wide again.

32 mins 0-0Craig Johns

Ramsey chance

The two Villa men combine. Ramsey into Archer's feet and he uses his body to shield the defender from the ball allowing Ramsey to run onto it and into the penalty area. He takes on the shot with his left foot but slices it wide.

Better play from Boro though as they probe for a way through a stubborn Huddersfield defence.

30 mins 0-0Craig Johns

Archer chance

Giles swings a corner in and it comes through a few to Archer towards the back post and he anticipates it well to produce an acrobatic volley but it's over the bar. He connected with the ball arguably too well.

28 mins 0-0Craig Johns

So far...

Huddersfield very much a Warnock team so far. Hard to break down, battling hard for every ball.

Boro so far not quite at their usual flowing best though. The pass or flick going astray that wouldn't usually.

25 mins 0-0Craig Johns

Ramsey effort

First shot on target is a tame one in the end as Ramsey gets a slight view of goal from the edge but can't get power behind his curling effort.

Holmes goes down again and is this time withdrawn for Jackson.

20 mins 0-0Craig Johns

Stoppage in play

Duane Holmes receiving treatment in what is his first game back from an injury. First start since January. He's back on after treatment.

19 mins 0-0Craig Johns

Close Akpom

Good build-up play from Boro down the left and Ramsey plays Giles in behind. He hits it low across the face of goal and Akpom is arriving, but that's a fantastic challenge from Ruffels to do enough to stop Akpom having a tap in.

18 mins 0-0Craig Johns

Better from Boro

Speeding things up and moving it side to side in the final third. Faced up by nine outfield players behind the ball though.

Archer almost gets a sight of goal but instead lays it off for Ramsey whose effort is blocked in the crowd.

10 mins 0-0Craig Johns

Boro settling

Slow start, but their settling now and looking to assert themselves into the game with possession. We're seeing the two CBs advance out of defence a lot with the ball so far, with Hackney or Howson covering when they do.

That's perhaps in recognition of Warnock's usual man-marking style and trying to throw that off.

5 mins 0-0Craig Johns

Lenihan clears on off the line

Ramsey feels he's fouled just inside Boro's half. But ref says no and Huddersfield break. Helik receives in the box and cuts back to Koroma. His strike beats Steffen, but Lenihan clears off the line.

Home side have started the better side here. Boro a bit off their stride so far.
