A Leicestershire village experienced an earthquake this morning, according to officials. The quake, which had a magnitude of 2.5, hit at around 1.40am.

Officials at the British Geological Society (BGS) said the quake's epicentre was in Belper, Derbyshire, but that the tremors crossed the border into Leicestershire. The BGS said the quake could be felt in Belton, near Loughborough.

Numerous reports of the event spoke of "moderate rumbling" across the East Midlands. The reports suggested the quake consisted of a "weak trembling" feeling for those affected.

Officials at Volcano Discovery, another tracker of earthquakes, said the incident was a "light magnitude" which had a "very shallow depth". In its report, Volcano Discovery said the earthquake was felt by "many near the epicentre".

In its report Volcano Discovery said there were no reported experiences in Loughborough nor Coalville of the tremors, but did say some reports of a "very weak" quake had been made in other areas of Derbyshire, including in Swadlincote, and in Nottinghamshire.
