Tributes have been paid to a 'bubbly' Huddersfield woman who died in hospital after being attacked in Fartown on Friday.

Police have now named the woman as 56-year-old Sandra Harriott, a popular and well-respected member of Netherhall Learning Campus High School's Inclusion and Student Support team in Rawthorpe. Roger Harriott, 55, of Manchester Road, Linthwaite, appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court this morning (Sat) after he was charged with her murder and possession of an offensive weapon. He was remanded to next appear at Leeds Crown Court on May 30.

One male neighbour said: "Everyone is in shock regarding what happened to Sandra, I have known her since the mid-80s and I was speaking to her only last week, she was friendly and polite, someone you would want as a neighbour. She was quite supportive and if there was some problem people would approach her to sort it out. She looked after her mother who was suffering from dementia and she also had an apartment close to Ashbrow Garage.

"Yesterday morning I heard screaming and shouting. At first, I thought it was kids trapped in a room and my initial thoughts were that it must be some kind of house fire and then I heard the sirens. Normally the sound fades and then it stopped and I realised it was closer to home than I thought.

"It has left everyone very upset and shaken." Another female neighbour said: "It is very upsetting. She was a lovely lady and everyone has been shaken by what has happened to Sandra."

And a male friend of Sandra's who has known her for decades added: "I am so sorry to see such a nice person like her go. She had a nice outgoing personality, just a lovely bubbly person. Everyone who met her immediately liked her."

West Yorkshire Police said today that enquiries remain ongoing by the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team into the 'murder', which occurred at 6.59am. Anyone who has information about the offence is asked to contact HMET on 101 referencing crime number 13230291733.

Information can also be given online at www.westyorkshire.police.uk/101livechat or anonymously to the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
