Terry Carter was approaching 50 and already had several lives behind him as a merchant seaman, a jazz pianist, a law student, a newsreader and an actor in sitcoms when he landed the signature role that made him a household name.

As Colonel Tigh in the 1978 sci-fi television series Battlestar Galactica, he was second in command of a fleet of starships defending human civilisation from a robotic race known as the Cylons.

He owed his prominence in the series to a roller-skating accident in which he fractured his ankle. He had originally been cast to play a lieutenant but while he was hors de combat he was replaced in the role by Herbert Jefferson Jr. Once he was able to walk unaided again,
