Isak can form lethal partnership with 23-year-old superstar at Newcastle next season

Newcastle United wanted Moussa Diaby to be their marquee arrival last summer, but instead moved for Alexander Isak.

The Magpies broke their transfer record to bring in Isak from Real Sociedad, ending a summer long pursuit for attacking reinforcements.

But before the move for the Swede, Newcastle were trying to sign Diaby. He had been identified as the winger Eddie Howe wanted, and there was even confidence that he would move to St James' Park.

However, he proved to be too expensive, with Bayer Leverkusen demanding at least £60million to sell the Frenchman. That was too much for Newcastle, who actually ended up spending more than that on Isak. He cost £63million.

Newcastle wanted Diaby over Isak

That is despite the fact that the Magpies apparently wanted to sign Diaby ahead of Isak. The Northern Echo claimed in July 2022 that the club preferred to sign the winger over the striker.

In the end it was actually Isak who arrived, with Howe unable to add a winger to his squad. He had to wait until January to do that, with Anthony Gordon joining from Everton for £45million.

But another winger appears to be on this summer's agenda for Newcastle, and a fresh move for Diaby is on the horizon. It has been reported that Newcastle are going to try to sign him once again, and are prepared to break their transfer record for him.

Now they could form an incredible partnership at St James' Park

The decision to get Isak over Diaby is proving to be a good one right now. Had Diaby joined last summer, we would not have seen the Miguel Almiron renaissance. He is our top scorer this season with 11 goals.

We are also starting to see the best of Isak, who has been absolutely outstanding in recent weeks. The 23-year-old now has six goals for his new club, and has been compared to Thierry Henry by teammate Joe Willock.

But there is still scope for him to get even better, and that is why the thought of Diaby arriving on Tyneside is so tantalising.

The two outrageously quick attackers could become quite the dynamic duo, and could ensure the club are able to build on what is proving to be a brilliant season.

Diaby has been prolific in the final third over the past couple of seasons, which is exactly what Newcastle are looking for. Almiron's form is not sustainable, while Allan Saint-Maximin is not consistent enough.

Howe needs forwards he can rely on, and Diaby can be exactly that if he is able to adapt to the Premier League.

We have seen hints of Isak and Saint-Maximin forming an exciting partnership, and the Toon's number 14 can do the same with Diaby.

Newcastle went for Isak over Diaby last summer which wasn't their preference, but they could soon have the dream of both players wearing black and white.
