Firefighters tackle blaze at city beauty spot - updates

A section of scrubland close to the Banners Gate entrance was ablaze. Two crews were on the scene and using jets to douse the flames.

Our reporter on the scene photographed smoke billowing into the air. They also saw a fire squad attempting to contain the inferno.

Our reporter said: "Around eight firefighters are using tools to dampen down the bushes. There is a lot of smoke in the air."

A message from firefighters read: "Firefighters from Perry Barr, Sutton Coldfield, Erdington and Aston are currently in attendance at a fire within Sutton park. Please avoid the area where possible."

Fire crews leave Sutton Park

Firefighters had been called to the blaze at 2.30pm.

Four crews had used an extended hose reel water jet and beaters to extinguish the flames.

Crews have now left Sutton Park.

Blaze 'brought under control quickly'

Our reporter said:

The fire started in the last half hour and has been brought under control quickly. A fourth fire engine has arrived but the incident looks under control. The area is largely scrubland intersected with windy paths. It leads to the golf course and woods.

Our reporter said the area concerned is just left of the path alongside a wooded area as you enter Sutton Park from Monmouth Drive at the Banners Gate junction.
