BBC's Great Expectations to hit screens after Salisbury filming

After filming in Wiltshire, BBC's newest adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations is finally due to air on TV. The show, which stars Oscar-winning Olivia Coleman as the highly strung Miss Havisham, has prompted quite a stir for being notably darker than previous retellings, featuring adult themes and violence.

Written by Peaky Blinders' Steven Knight, this upcoming series will be the 18th iteration of the story told on screens and, while some fans have complained that barely a decade has passed since the BBC's last Great Expectations telling, others are excited for the sexier, more violent version promised in the trailer. Alongside Coleman, Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk) stars as love-sick Pip with Shalom Brune-Franklin (War of the Worlds) as his Estella.

Almost exactly one year ago, film crews wrapped up shooting in Wiltshire, with fans turning up to the Salisbury film set to try and catch a glimpse of the cast and crew - including Tom Hardy, and Ridley Scott, who are executive producers on the show.

Catherine Sample snapped the crew in action back in March 2022. She told WiltshireLive: "I was aware that filming of Great Expectations was going to take place but I was not prepared for the excitement of actually seeing it happen.

"As I arrived at the far end of The Close smoke was billowing providing a foggy backdrop for a horse and cart and a lone horseman. There were masses of film crew but it was possible to see the young Pip dismount from the cart and enter the overgrown garden of Miss Havisham's house. Myles Place had been transformed into a eerie, overgrown house very much suited to Miss Havisham."

The classic Dickens' story follows young Pip, an orphan who yearns for a better lot in life until a twist of fate leaves him in the hands of the mysterious and eccentric Miss Havisham, whose machinations show him a dark world of possibilities.

Under the great expectations placed upon him, Pip will have to work out the true cost of this new world and whether it will truly make him the man he wishes to be. A damning critique of the class system, Dickens' novel was published in 1861 after first releasing it in a series of weekly chapters beginning in December 1860.
