Before Rishi Sunak had finished talking about the imminent passage of his Rwanda bill, Labour insiders had seized on the real message of his press conference. This meant an early election.

The prime minister's pledge to get flights off the ground within 12 weeks was, to their ears, the latest confirmation of their long-running theory that Sunak will stun us all and announce a summer election. The theory goes: you get one flight off in early July, you treat it like the moon landings, but you run to the country before a summer of migrant crossings reveals Rwanda to be no deterrent at all.
