All the protected trees in Plymouth facing the chop

Plymouth has been thrust into the spotlight this week after the Armada Way trees were hacked down in the dead of night. Under the cover of darkness - just hours after the council had signed off on the revamp of the city centre, contractors took their chainsaws to the trees.

The tree-felling was stopped at about 1am on Wednesday, March 15, when Straw served a court injunction on the council. About 110 of 129 threatened trees had been removed by this time.

It comes as Plymouth City Council has felled more than 1,000 trees since 2010, but has planted almost eight times that number, a Freedom of Information request submitted by PlymouthLive has revealed.

The revelation comes after the council controversially bulldozed 110 trees in the city centre this week, which has sparked outrage both locally and nationally. While the work did not require planning permission to be carried out, that is not the case for all greenery in and around Plymouth.

If you wish to prune or fell a tree on your property you may require planning permission, depending on whether your tree is protected by either a Tree Preservation Order or a conservation area. Many trees are protected by Tree Preservation orders (TPO) which means that, in general, you need the council's consent to prune or fell them. In addition, there are controls over many other trees in conservation areas.

A whole raft of applications are still awaiting decisions by Plymouth City Council planners as to if works to pollard, cut down and fell trees in the city.

Below is the full list of applications yet to be determined, as well as all the applications determined so far in 2023.
