Motorists warned over month of lane closures on A6 and A46

Original source (on modern site)

Rolling lane closures could cause delays on two busy roads in north Leicestershire over the coming weeks for a major spring clean. The work to remove litter from the verges and central reservations will take place on the A46 north of Leicester and on the A6 between Leicester and Loughborough, from Saturday, March 25.

Charnwood Borough Council has contracted Serco to do the work, which will involve litter-pickers going along the busy roads while lanes are shut to keep the workers safe. The clean-up is completed twice a year and normally takes place around the same time as the clocks change - clocks go forward one hour at 1am on Sunday morning in the UK.

Matt Bradford, from the council, said: "The council is committed to caring for the environment and keeping the borough a clean place to live and visit. Part of this includes cleansing sections of the A6 and A46 in Charnwood twice a year.

"A significant amount of planning is required for the clean-ups including rolling lane closures which will be in place while work is being carried out. We understand it's frustrating to see litter on the roads.

"I would urge people to also play their part in looking after the environment by placing any rubbish in a litter bin while they are out and about or save it and dispose of it at home. Small actions can make a big difference, so please do your bit and help us to keep our borough clean and tidy."

The clean-up is due to start this Saturday and continue until Friday, April 21. A rolling lane closure will be in place while cleaning is being carried out and the council has warned that traffic may face some delays.

The work will cover the main carriageway and all accessible grass verges. The central reservation will be cleared first followed by the outside verges on both sides.

The full schedule of the clean-up can be found at the council's website here.
