Hundreds of people are set to parade through the streets of Liverpool today as part of the Battle of the Atlantic commemorations.

The city is marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic with a programme of events this weekend. A Drumhead service of thanksgiving will be held at the Pier Head at midday on Sunday followed by the March for the Medals.

The march will start in Exchange Flags before making its way to Princes Parade where a group of Battle of the Atlantic veterans, now all in their 90s at least, will take the salute from the marching troops. Those who have family medals related to the Battle of the Atlantic, or any other related Second World War campaign, are invited to wear them in honour of their loved ones.

The weekend's commemorations will conclude with the military vessels sailing down the Mersey at 5pm. The ships will be escorted by a convoy from the Mersey's maritime community and a 'Beat Retreat' played by His Majesty's Royal Marines Band at Pier Head.
