In pictures: Battle of the Atlantic commemorations continue on the Mersey

A series of events are taking place in Liverpool to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic.

Military ships, led by destroyer HMS Defender have been arriving in Liverpool since Friday for the anniversary commemorations.

The battle was the longest continuous military operation during the Second World War and key to the Allies' victory.

The six-year operation ensured soldiers and supplies were safely transported between North America and Europe between 1939 and 1945.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal unveiled a new national memorial on Friday to those who fought - and won - Britain's longest battle at sea: the Battle of the Atlantic.

The ships will remain in Liverpool for the weekend and will be joined by the US destroyer USS Ramage.

'Military village' across the Pier Head has had a host of free family activities from across the tri-service, including a Typhoon simulator, a Royal Navy VR speedboat simulator, climbing walls, bungee runs, a Spitfire replica, tanks, helicopters, and vintage military vehicles.

The Battle of the Atlantic displays and special family activities have been open for visitors at Western Approaches Museum, and the Maritime Museum in the Royal Albert Dock.

Historic aircraft were part of a flyby over the Royal Liver Building on the waterfront involving a Lancaster Bomber, Spitfire and Hurricane.
