They have been called the rats of the coast for stealing food, waking people with their screeching and pecking at windows. Now, however, a competition in Belgium aims to do away with the rowdy reputation of seagulls — by making humans ­imitate their screams.

A British boy, nine, took home a gold medal at the European seagull screeching contest last weekend, having been inspired after being pecked by one on a seaside holiday. Cooper Wallace from Chesterfield, Derby­shire, won the junior league, scoring 92 out of 100, more than any of the 56 competitors, including 46 adults.
