Vera will be coming to an end on ITV after it was announced star Brenda Blethyn was stepping down as DCI Stanhope.

The announcement came alongside a series of photographs showing filming for the show's final instalment. The star described her experience as being "a joy from beginning to end" and said she was "so proud" of the team's achievements.

However, viewers believe the series could be given a new lease of life with another member of the cast taking charge.

On Facebook, they suggested DC Kenny Lockhart (played by Jon Morrison) could follow in Vera's footsteps.

Gayle Peck wrote: "Maybe Kenny could be promot[ed]", which sparked a conversation with other fans.

Sonja Rasmussen Henry shared: "When Kenny and Joe [Ashworth] were talking at the table, Joe said he wanted his own team.

"Was that a hint that there may be a spin-off? Here in the US, NCIS has been on TV for 21 years. The main character had been on the show for 19 seasons, but left. We were devastated!

"However, the team stayed, the new guy is great and it is still going strong! I, for one, will be watching any spin-off that the writers give us."

Michelle French commented: "I would watch it, Kenny!" with a thumbs up emoji.

DC Kenny Lockhart is a long serving member of the investigation team.

However, Dolores Krisky felt another character could fill Vera's shoes, saying: "Hoping they brought Joe back to create a new, follow up series with Joe as the lead."

However, Doreen Krisky felt Joe Ashworth (played by David Leon) was not the best man for the job.

She said: "Hopefully not, he's good with Vera as his superior but he doesn't have what it takes to be the lead character.

"I don't think he has any rapport with the rest of the team. Brenda decided to quit the role of Vera and the TV company have decided the show will end there."

There are no plans to revive the series at this moment in time.
