ITV's content chief has criticised the BBC for "bleating" about being strapped for cash while buying expensive American television series.

Kevin Lygo, the commercial broadcaster's managing director of media and entertainment, said that he was astounded to discover that ITV had been outbid by the BBC for Suits, the legal drama starring Meghan Markle.

"We have the BBC bleating about [lower budgets] when they have all the money in the world. Why do they buy all that American stuff?" he told the Voice of the Listener & Viewer spring conference. "I have had a go at so many different BBC people about this. They just bought Suits and you think, 'Why?' They outbid us. What's that got to do with licence-fee payers' money?"

Kevin Lygo, ITV's content chief, said competition for viewers was fiercer than ever
