Passengers have been warned to prepare for disruption after a train drivers' union announced three days of strike action in May. The industrial action is set to affect train operators including Thameslink, Greater Anglia, and Great Northern.

The ASLEF union, which represents train drivers, called a set of strikes between May 7 and May 9. There will also be a six-day overtime ban between the May Day bank holiday (May 6) and May 11 as part of a long-running pay dispute.

A National Rail spokesperson said: "On the days where full strike action is taking place this is likely to result in little or no services across large areas of the network operated by the affected train companies. Services are also likely to be disrupted and start later on the day immediately following a full strike day.

"Passengers are warned to expect significant disruption and advised to plan ahead and check before you travel."

Operators in Cambridgeshire affected by the strike action include Greater Anglia, CrossCountry, Thameslink, and Great Northern.

The dates of the strike action are:

Mick Whelan, ASLEF general secretary, said: "It is now a year since we sat in a room with the train companies - and a year since we rejected the risible offer they made and which they admitted, privately, was designed to be rejected."

Drivers were offered a two-year deal worth four per cent per year, alongside changes to working conditions.

"We are aware that the ASLEF union have announced industrial action at CrossCountry on Wednesday 8 May and action short of a strike between Monday 6 May and Saturday 11 May," a CrossCountry spokesperson said. "Please check your entire journey before you travel."

A Greater Anglia spokesperson said most of their trains are expected to run on most days, except for May 7 when there will be a reduced service. They added: "We hope we can avert strike action and come to an agreement with the ASLEF union."
