Passengers across the Midlands were stranded as trains were stopped as police dealt with a vulnerable person at New Street Station. All services were halted as officers dealt with an incident near the busy Birmingham city centre station during rush hour at around 7.15am today, Wednesday, April 24.

The person was brought to safety and services resumed at around 8.15am. British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Birmingham New Street railway station just after 7.15am to reports of a person in a precarious position.

"Officers attended, alongside paramedics. A man has now been taken to a place of safety."

New Street Station posted on X: "Lines in and out of New Street have reopened after @BTPBhm resolved an earlier incident. There will be disruption throughout the morning while we work to get all trains on the move again."

Passengers were told no trains could move in or out of the station during the alert, leaving some stuck on trains mid-journey and others at outlying stations scrambling to make alternative travel plans.

Tickets were being accepted on Chiltern Railways, which operates out of the city centre's other two stations, Snow Hill and Moor Street, via any "reasonable route" and also on National Express West Midlands buses. British Transport Police said on X during the incident: "Officers are at Birmingham New Street Station this morning dealing with an ongoing incident on the tracks.

"For safety of all those involved there will be delays to planned journeys this morning in and out of the station. Please check your train operator for updates."

One passenger wrote on X during the incident: "We aren't moving and have been told it's a life-threatening incident being dealt with by emergency services in front of us." Another said they had been able to get off a train they were travelling on.

Earlier, passengers at New Street were greeted by electronic information boards showing every service was delayed.
