Terrifying footage has emerged of a massive tornado tearing through Nebraska, with severe weather warnings issued across a large part of the US.

The twister was filmed on the ground in Lincoln, Nebraska, with cars seen driving towards it as it crossed the I-80 northeast of the city.

Emergency services were called to Garner Industries, near Lincoln, where there are reports of injuries and extensive damage caused by the tornado. Residents have been urged to seek immediate shelter, with images showing the aftermath of the storm, including power lines strewn across the area.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has warned of an enhanced risk "this afternoon and evening from eastern Nebraska/western Iowa southward to eastern Oklahoma and northeast Texas.

According to NOAA's Storm Prediction Centre: "Further warnings have been issued for Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri. NOAA's Storm Prediction Centre has said: "Tornadoes, including a couple of strong tornadoes, very large hail (some greater than 2 inches in diameter), and wind damage remain possible this afternoon/evening from eastern Kansas/Nebraska into Iowa, western Missouri, eastern Oklahoma, western Arkansas, and northeast Texas."

A weather enthusiast on X exclaimed: "Large wedge tornado just outside Bennington, Nebraska moments ago. Major damage being reported to houses."

The ferocious storm tossed massive vehicles around as if they were mere playthings. AccuWeather meteorologists have flagged a high risk of tornadoes, potent winds, and sizeable hail across parts of the central US today.

The areas under threat are situated in the notorious Tornado Alley, an area not officially defined but well-known for its frequent twisters. The name 'Tornado Alley' was coined in 1952, headlining a study focused on extreme weather patterns prevalent in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kansas, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska.
