ITV slaps warning on Terry and June re-runs over 'discriminatory language'

ITV has issued a significant warning over the language used in the classic '80s sitcom, Terry and June.

The broadcaster alerted viewers on its streaming service that the beloved TV show, which originally aired during the early evening, contained "discriminatory language".

The BBC One series, which ran from 1979 to 1987 across nine series, starred Dame June Whitfield and Terry Scott as a suburban couple whose children have left home. At its peak, Terry and June drew audiences of 15 million.

ITV did not elaborate on the specific language used, reports the Mirror.

However, fan Paul Phipps-Williams commented on X, formerly known as Twitter: "There's an episode where Terry is at a work conference and puts June's perfume on by mistake."

He added: "The entire episode is about how his boss hates gays, and how Terry is terrified about being thought of one. Cue every '70s homophobic comedy trope."

ITV said in a statement: "Programming that contains potentially sensitive language has carried appropriate warnings since our launch. We regularly re-examine historical programming in order to review, re-label, provide context and ensure the right guidance is in place."

Scott and Dame June were a hit in Happy Ever After, and the 1973 film adaptation of Bless This House.

With a career spanning over four decades, she graced our screens and airwaves in more than 1,300 radio and TV shows, appeared in four Carry On films, and charmed a new generation with her role in Absolutely Fabulous.

Her remarkable contributions to entertainment were honoured when she was made a Dame in 2017, but sadly, she died in 2018 at the age of 93.

The beloved sitcom Terry and June came to an end in 1988, coinciding with Scott's personal turmoil as he battled a nervous breakdown.

His private life had become public knowledge as he revealed having multiple affairs during his marriage to ex-dancer Maggie Pollen, while also fighting cancer.

Scott, who died in 1994 at the age of 67, famously remarked: "I know it would be better to give up the booze, fags and birds but life would be so boring, wouldn't it?"
