NASA has revealed an all-new electric propulsion system for small spacecraft.

The new propulsion system, the NASA-H71M sub-kilowatt Hall-effect thruster, will be used for planetary exploration as well as for increasing the lifespan of existing satellites.

The system is part of NASA's broader plan to commercialize specific technologies. By allowing private industry partners to test and develop the technology, they could eventually rely on those partners for future missions.
