Boy, 15, who died in River Eden named by police

A teenager who died after going into a river with three other boys has been named.

Rescuers found Lewis Michael Kirkpatrick, 15, in the River Eden, Carlisle, on Saturday afternoon.

A 14-year-old boy was airlifted to hospital and remained in a critical condition.

Fans at Wembley Stadium stood up in the 15th minute of the Carlisle United v Stockport County play-off final and applauded in tribute to Lewis.

BBC commentator James Phillips said it was "quite a scene to behold".

Cumbria Police's search operation began after receiving reports that four teenagers had got into difficulty while in the water.

One of the boys managed to swim to safety and another was saved by a member of the public.

They had to be checked over by medics but were unhurt.

People in the Rosehill area, close to where the boy's body was found, described the news as "shocking" and "a tragedy".

Local fire and rescue services have issued a warning over the dangers of swimming in open water.

'Tragic incident'

Cumberland Council's deputy leader Lisa Brown said "my heart goes out to the families involved".

"It's such a tragic incident. I've got children myself and you don't imagine anything like this happening.

"The council will be there where it's needed in the next stages to work out what happened and what we can do to get the message out that swimming can be dangerous.

"We need to do more to prevent this from ever happening again."

Chief Superintendent Lisa Hogan said on Saturday: "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the 15-year-old boy at this difficult time."
