The death of 27 migrants trying to cross the Channel has led to a blame game between Britain and France

It was perhaps too much to hope that the deaths of 27 people in the Channel, among them a small girl and a pregnant woman, might bring a change of tone to the debate over migration. Instead this shocking but sadly unsurprising tragedy served to sharpen the cross-Channel war of words as Britain and France sought to point the finger of blame at one another. Boris Johnson once again accused France of not doing enough to crack down on smuggler gangs and prevent the dinghies leaving French shores. In response Emmanuel Macron, the French president, accused Britain of not doing enough to address the pull factors, including a large black economy, that entice migrants to make the dangerous crossing.
