Cabinet reshuffle: Dominic Raab is deputy PM and Liz Truss becomes foreign secretary

Dominic Raab has been handed the role of deputy prime minister after suggestions he refused a demotion during a tense meeting with Boris Johnson.

Raab has become the first person to occupy the role since Nick Clegg, the former Liberal Democrat leader. He will combine the role with being justice secretary.

The Times has been told that during his meeting with Johnson he refused to accept a direct demotion from foreign secretary to justice secretary.

Johnson subsequently added deputy prime minister to his title to cushion the blow. Liz Truss, the international trade secretary, has become the first female Conservative foreign secretary, while Priti Patel remains home secretary.
