Haulage firms desperate for HGV drivers recruit binmen on their rounds

Refuse collectors are being poached by haulage companies to plug the shortage of HGV drivers, with some being recruited while on their rounds.

They are being offered pay rises to help fill about 100,000 vacancies, creating disruption to bin collections.

North Somerset council has lost five bin lorry drivers to haulage companies in the past two weeks, with one driver approached in his cab at lunchtime.

Some councils are having to cut bin collections. Last week, The Times reported that at least 18 councils had to suspend or delay collections of garden waste after struggling to find drivers.

North Somerset has suspended its green waste collections for two weeks. Four councils in Surrey have suspended their collections until next year.
