Asylum claims at highest level for 20 years as Channel crossings surge

Channel crossings have fuelled a rise in asylum claims as they reached their highest level for nearly 20 years.

Government figures show a surge of 15,104 applications between July and September, with about two thirds coming from migrants who had crossed the Channel in small boats.

The backlog of cases waiting to be dealt with is also at a record high, according to Home Office statistics out today. There are now almost 88,000 people waiting to hear if their claim for asylum will be granted.

The backlog has been fuelled by lengthy processing times, with fewer than one in five of all asylum applications processed within six months. The average claim now takes more than a year, according to Home Office officials.
