Are police in France waving through boats of Channel migrants?

French police have rejected British claims they are waving through migrant boats, arguing that officers intervene in most circumstances but cannot safely do so when they are heavily outnumbered on the beach.

Desperate migrants, potentially mixed with armed smugglers, pose a risk to officers if they are not equipped and informed with sufficient intelligence to intercept the boats. The gangs who bring boats and people from Belgium and Germany are also using ever more sophisticated tactics, overwhelming the 780 police officers and gendarmes deployed to patrol 100 miles of France's northern coast.

"To stop the departures, you would have to station a police officer almost every ten metres along the coast," an investigating officer with the frontier and air police said. The authorities claim that
