AstraZeneca vaccine sidelined in UK's booster dose drive

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine will not form a routine part of Britain's booster programme, as the government revealed all over-50s will be offered Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna for the third dose irrespective of their first two.

The announcement yesterday follows the distribution of a billion doses of the British jab to 170 countries. But after fears of rare clotting events, its use has been limited in much of the developed world.

Third jabs of the mRNA-based Pfizer and Moderna vaccines will begin next week in the most vulnerable, with most adults being offered a booster in the coming months to prepare for a "bumpy" winter.
