Train services have been disrupted after firefighters were called to an incident involving the Caledonian Sleeper at a Fife rail station.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent three fire engines to the scene when the alarm was raised at 05:46 on Wednesday.

It led to disruption to ScotRail's services between Edinburgh and Arbroath.

Caledonian Sleeper blamed a "technical issue" on an Aberdeen-bound locomotive.

A spokesperson said it resulted in damage to some electrical cables and some smoke.

"All of our guests and staff were safely taken off the train at Cupar as a precaution, and they are currently completing their journeys by alternative transport," they added.

"The passenger coaches were unaffected, and the defective locomotive has been removed from the train and returned to our maintenance facility.

"All of tonight's Caledonian Sleeper services are due to run as scheduled."
