Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

UNICEF

In February, Türkiye was struck by devastating earthquakes that shattered countless lives and ruined communities. As the dust settles, it became evident that the urgent needs of the affected population extended beyond physical rebuilding. Access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and basic hygiene supplies were among the critical requirements to restore a sense of normalcy for the survivors.

Approximately 2.4 million individuals found themselves displaced, living in temporary settlements without adequate water and sanitation services. The dire situation demanded immediate action, and UNICEF, recognizing the needs and working closely with the Government of Türkiye, stepped in to address the pressing needs of the affected communities.

UNICEF has provided access to safe water in the affected regions through repairs to the water supply systems, provision of chlorine/chemicals, water quality testing, water trucking, and water storage.

Through the collaborative efforts of UNICEF with its partners, over 1,383,370 people now have access to safe water through a combined approach of different solutions responding to specific needs. Water trucking has become a lifeline for many, as trucks filled with clean water make regular visits to the settlements, ensuring a steady supply for cleaning, cooking, and personal hygiene. Furthermore, the provision of chlorine and other essential chemicals help purify the available water sources, safeguarding the health of the vulnerable population.

The lack of proper sanitation facilities posed significant health risks for the earthquake survivors. UNICEF, driven by the commitment to leave no one behind and in close coordination with the Government of Türkiye, has made remarkable progress in addressing this issue. As a result, 861,585 people now have access to improved sanitation facilities and services. Clean and functional toilets and showers, equipped with necessary hygiene supplies, have been installed to ensure the dignity and well-being of the affected individuals.

UNICEF is working with municipality partners to help re-establish and rehabilitate water and sanitation facilities and infrastructure and solid waste management, providing essential equipment and water treatment chemicals and training staff to monitor and evaluate water quality.

Recognizing the importance of personal hygiene in preventing the spread of diseases, UNICEF distributed hygiene supplies to over 586,648 individuals, including families and infants. Family hygiene kits, comprising essentials such as soap, towels, and sanitary products, have become the building blocks of cleanliness and health. Similarly, baby hygiene kits provided caregivers with the necessary tools to protect the most vulnerable members of their families.

Among the beneficiaries of these WASH activities are the millions of children who have endured unimaginable difficulties. Providing access to safe water and promoting hygiene practices created an environment where children could thrive. Without the anxiety of waterborne illnesses or unclean surroundings, these children are able to focus on their education, dreams, and aspirations.

While significant progress has been made, the journey to full recovery is still far from over. Many children and their families still require ongoing support. UNICEF, alongside the Government of Türkiye, resolutely continues its work and calls upon the global community to rally together, to secure a brighter, healthier future for every child in Türkiye.
