POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) - A local doctor has passed away.

Dr. John Venglarcik, III, 72, passed away suddenly on Sunday at his home, according to his obituary.

WKBN spoke to Venglarcik over the years for his expertise in infectious diseases, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Venglarcik graduated from Struthers High School before studying at Kent State and Youngstown State universities, going on to receive his medical degree from The Ohio State University.

He worked at Tod Children's Hospital before establishing his private practice in Youngstown. He was also a master teacher at NEOMED.

"He liked to take care of people. He really enjoyed taking care of patients. If he had the choice of working out in the yard and grass or taking care of people, he would rather take care of people. That's what he liked to do," said Margaret Venglarcik, wife.

Family and friends may pay their respects from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, according to his obituary.
