Democracy Dies in Darkness April 28, 2024 at 7:00 a.m. EDT correction A photo caption with a previous version of this article incorrectly said that the photo showed a spine with scoliosis. The photo has been replaced with a photo that shows a spine with scoliosis. I still remember grimacing at my back X-ray at age 13. My spine looked like a road curving around an invisible mountain. How could this be my body? The doctor called my condition "scoliosis." I didn't tell anyone at school about it and hoped my clothes hid it well.
