Portal POP! Calipari's 6th commit is grand-slam home run: FAU transfer Johnell Davis

Davis (6-4 guard, native of Gary, Ind.) visited Arkansas last weekend and ultimately chose the Hoop Hogs over Kentucky and a host of other suitors. He's a consensus Top 3 portal prospect, which includes checking in as the top overall player according to CBS Sports' portal prospect rankings.

Davis also previously declared for the NBA Draft, and with NBA G-League Elite Camp and the NBA Draft Combine upcoming in mid-May it remains unclear if he'll formally withdraw from draft consideration soon or if he'll go through the process with a final decision to be made later in May. The deadline to withdraw from the draft with intentions to return to college is May 29.

Davis was named 2023-24 American Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year after averaging 18.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 48.3% on field goals, including 41.4% from 3, and 85.7% from the free throw line while leading the Owls to the NCAA Tournament.

He scored 20 or more points 12 times in '23-24, including 30 or more three times. He notched a season-high 35 points to go with 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals in FAU's 96-95 double-overtime loss to No. 4 Arizona on Dec. 23, 2023.

He hung 26 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists on 12th-ranked Texas A&M in the Owls' 96-89 neutral-site win over the Aggies on Nov. 24, and he recorded 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists in FAU's 98-89 neutral-site loss to 20th-ranked Illinois on Dec. 5.

As a junior in '22-23, Davis led FAU to the NCAAT Final Four as he averaged 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.6 steals per outing in the team's five-game run through the Big Dance. He notched his career-high of 36 points against Alabama-Birmingham during the regular season as a junior.

Davis — he played four seasons at FAU — has one season of remaining playing eligibility.

He becomes Calipari's sixth commitment since coming to Arkansas, which also makes him the sixth scholarship player on the Razorbacks roster that can have as many as 13 scholarship players for the upcoming '24-25 season. He joins Tennessee's All SEC transfer Jonas Aidoo (6-11 forward / center), Kentucky freshman transfer Zvonimir Ivisic (7-2 forward / center), and 2024 5-star backcourt studs Karter Knox (6-6), Boogie Fland (6-2), and Billy Richmond (6-6), all of whom pledged to Arkansas earlier in April.

Davis is a skilled, athletic, savvy scoring guard who breaks down defenders at all three levels in a variety of determined ways combined with a blue-collar attitude as a rebounder and 50/50-ball warrior.
