Sofía Vergara is expanding on her reasoning for not wanting to have any more kids at this point in her life.

The Griselda star sat down with People for its cover this week and opened up about how in dating, following her split from Joe Manganiello, someone wanting more kids was a dealbreaker for her. The actress previously revealed in Spanish newspaper El País that her ex-husband's desire for more children was a big part of their split.

"My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn't want to be an old mom," she told the publication in a story published in January. "I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I'm ready to be a grandmother, not a mother. So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children."

The Modern Family star expanded on that sentiment with People, noting that she's happiest when she spends time with her only child because of their close mother-son relationship since she had him young.

"I wish I was older sometimes because I would've been more mature, more prepared to be a mother, but that was what I got and what happened," she said. "So I just kept going and try not to look back at it, because it is what it is. But it is fun because I kind of grew up together with my son."

She explained that sometimes there are things in life that sound like a good idea, and they're not. For her, that was being a mother at 50. She added, "I know what it means to be a good mother or to try to be the best mother that you can, and that takes a lot of sacrifices, takes a lot of energy."

While scientific advancements make it easier for women today to have children later in life, the actress pointed out that wasn't natural for women before, and it's not what she wanted. However, that doesn't mean she disagrees with women who have children when they're older.

"I totally respect where anyone wants to be a mom after 50," Vergara said. "I didn't think because of my career, the way I live my life, the way my marriage was, that it was fair to bring a kid to this world, and I'm not going to be able to give 100 percent."

Vergara and Manganiello announced they were getting divorced in July 2023, after seven years of marriage. The pair met in May 2014 through Vergara's Modern Family co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson and tied the knot in November 2015.
