"Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick," the trailer's description reads. "Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone, until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka — the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny — their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe."

According to the trailer, the movie will feature original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, so prepare to update your playlists.

Blue Ivy was already famously part of 2019's The Lion King, aiding her mother in the soundtrack by participating in "Brown Skin Girl." Blue Ivy earned her first Grammy for the song and became the then-youngest female artist to enter Billboard's Hot 100 — a feat that has since been surpassed by her own sister, Rumi Carter. After her spotlight-stealing appearances on Beyoncé's Renaissance tour, expect Mufasa: The Lion King to take things up a notch.

Directed by Barry Jenkins and written by Jeff Nathanson, Mufasa: The Lion King will hit theaters on December 20, 2024, so mark your calendars accordingly.
