What is the Met Gala?

Launched in 1948 by famed fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, the Met Gala is an annual benefit for the museum's Costume Institute, serving as the department's main source of funding for its operations, exhibitions, as well as capital improvements. The institute boasts the world's largest costume collection, featuring more than 33,000 objects from the 15th century to the present, showcasing fashionable items and outfits from different eras.

The gala — which attracts some of the biggest names in fashion, film, and more each year — is also used to celebrate the opening of the institute's annual spring exhibitions. According to a press release, the Met Gala has raised more than $223.5 million for the institute under the guidance of Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who has served as a trustee of the museum since 1999.

When is the 2024 Met Gala?

Held on the first Monday in May each year, the 2024 Met Gala will take place May 6 at the museum in New York City.

Who are this year's co-chairs?

Wintour, who has co-chaired the event nearly every year since 1995, will have a few famous faces joining her to host the 2024 Met Gala. "Challengers" star Zendaya will help host this year, along with music superstar Bad Bunny, "Thor" actor Chris Hemsworth, and actress and singer Jennifer Lopez. In addition, TikTok CEO Shou Chew and LOEWE creative director Jonathan Anderson have been tapped as the night's honorary chairs.

How can I watch?

Unfortunately, except for the occasional bathroom selfie, don't expect to see much from inside the Met Gala. The event is notoriously secretive and requires guests to adhere to a no-phones rule. However, fans can get their fashion fix with all of the red carpet coverage before the gala.

Vogue will be streaming live on its website and across its social media platforms starting at 6 p.m., featuring actor Gwendoline Christie, producer La La Anthony, and model Ashley Graham as hosts. Social media star Emma Chamberlain is also back as Vogue's red carpet correspondent. For traditional TV watchers, E! has its own Met Gala red carpet show set to kick off at 6 p.m. on Monday.
