Tensions erupted at the Canelo Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia press conference as the boxing superstar took aim at promoter Oscar De La Hoya.

The fight itself might be between Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia, but that contest took a notable backstep at the pre-fight press conference as tensions almost spilled over when Oscar De La Hoya decided to trade insults with the boxing superstar.

Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya almost come to blows

Canelo Alvarez finally returns to the ring this weekend to defend his undisputed super-middleweight title against undefeated star Jaime Munguia; set to take place this Saturday, May 4 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

It's the first time Canelo and De La Hoya have worked together on the same promotion since their bitter split back in 2020, and it didn't take long before yet another war of words erupted on stage at the press conference.

"But that doesn't change the fact that Golden Boy built Canelo Alvarez, period. The company you fought under for decades has always had one name, and it's mine, so put some f***** respect on it."

De La Hoya raised tensions up a notch further by bringing up Avarez's positive test for a banned substance before his 2018 rematch with GGG, before the Mexican superstar started to approach his old promoter; only for security to pull him away.

As clips of the incident began to spread on social media, fighters from around the world of combat sports began to react to the altercation; many of which sided with the boxing superstar, as opposed to the controversial promoter.

Luckily, 'The Notorious' Conor McGregor had a suggestion for how the two could settle their differences and of course, it involves the 51-year-old former champion stepping back in the ring - albeit under a different set of rules.

"I'd love these two [to] go at it [in the] Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship. Take off the gloves and fight, b****!"

Whilst the idea of Canelo actually fighting 51-year-old De La Hoya would almost certainly never actually happen, a reminder that the upcoming boxing fight between 27-year-old Jake Paul and 57-year-old Mike Tyson has been sanctioned as a professional bout.

The comment comes on the heels of McGregor being announced as a new part-owner of the BKFC promotion, which notably held its biggest event to date last weekend at Knucklemania4.

BKFC President David Feldman celebrated McGregor's involvement with the fast-rising promotion on the Knucklemania4 broadcast:

"I'm over the moon… The biggest guy in combat sports, one of the top 10 guys in combat sports history, is now a part owner of BKFC. You tell me what that's going to do? It's going to the moon!"

Back to this weekend's action, and Canelo rides into Cinco de Mayo weekend with a record of 60-2-2, having bounced back from a decision loss to Dmitry Bivol with UD wins over Gennadiy Golovkin, John Ryder, and Jermell Charlo.

Standing across the ring will be fellow Mexican star Jaime Munguia, who holds a perfect professional record of 43-0 - his last bout came against John Ryder back in January, in which Munguia got the late stoppage.
