Filmmaker Kiran Rao recently opened up about her struggles with multiple miscarriages before the birth of her son, Azad. In an interview with Zoom, she revealed the emotional toll that these losses took on her and how they affected her journey to motherhood.

Rao's journey to motherhood was marked by a series of heartbreaking losses, each one taking a toll on her emotional well-being. Despite her resilience and determination, she found herself grappling with feelings of sadness, frustration, and grief. "The year that 'Dhobi Ghat' was made was the year that Azad was born. And I had tried very hard to have a child. For five years, I had had a lot of miscarriages, a lot of personal, physical health issues," she said.

Back in August 2009, Aamir Khan too took to his blog to share the heartbreaking news with his followers, revealing that he and his wife, Kiran Rao, had experienced a miscarriage. Despite their efforts to prevent it, they were unable to avert the loss of their baby. Aamir expressed the struggles they had endured over the past two months and announced that both he and Kiran needed time to heal. His absence from the blog during that period reflected the emotional toll of their loss, and he informed his readers that he would be taking a break for a while to prioritize their healing process.

For Rao, the birth of her son, Azad, was a ray of hope amidst the darkness of her previous miscarriages. His arrival brought joy and fulfillment, but it also served as a reminder of the challenges she had overcome to become a mother. Reflecting on her decision to step away from showbiz after the birth of her son, Azad, Kiran emphasised that the years spent raising Azad were some of the happiest of her life and asserted that she holds no regrets about not having made a film in a decade.
