APT31, described as a "China-nexus cyber espionage actor" by cybersecurity firm Mandiant, focuses on obtaining information that could benefit the Chinese government and state-owned enterprises. Dowden stated that despite the attempts, the hacking efforts to compromise the email accounts of UK lawmakers were unsuccessful.
