Nagpur: The

second phase

of

polling

in Maharashtra clocked a significant drop in turnout with

Vidarbha

witnessing an 8% dip compared to 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Across five constituencies of Vidarbha and three in Marathwada, the collective polling stood at a mere 59.6% (as of 11pm), marking the lowest turnout in country on Friday. Maharashtra, which is the second-largest electoral state with 48 seats, is readying for three more rounds of polling from May 7 to May 20.

In Vidarbha's five constituencies — Akola, Buldhana, Amravati, Yavatmal-Washim, and Wardha, the turnout clocked 53.97% till 5 pm, significantly lower than last two polls.

In 2014, the average turnout was 61.16%, and in 2019 it was 61.44%. This marks a dip of 7.19% compared to 2014 and 7.61% drop compared to 2019.

Carrying forward the trend in the eastern part of the region, snags in EVMs and Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines coupled with the blistering heat, contributed to a lower turnout in west Vidarbha.
