PUNE: After the

Surat fiasco

where the

Congress

candidate was disqualified and BJP's Mukesh Dalal was declared winner unopposed, the Maharashtra Congress has directed its functionaries in charge of the remaining constituencies to ensure that the nomination forms of all nominees and their alternative candidates are scrutinised.

"In the backdrop of what happened in Surat, our party will have to be extra careful while filing the remaining nomination papers.

They will have to scrutinise each and every application along with the supporting documents attached with the form," Prithviraj Chavan, party's campaign committee head for the state, told TOI. Soon after the incident on April 22, the ex-chief minister rushed to Surat.

Of the 48 Lok Sabha seats, Congress will contest 17 seats. While Shiv Sena (UBT) will fight for 21 seats, NCP (SP) will field candidates for the 10 seats. While the country went to the polls in the second phase on Friday, voters in eight constituencies in Maharashtra sealed the fate of candidates. Now all the parties are concentrating on the next phases which will cover the remaining parts in Marathwada, western Maharashtra and north Maharashtra.

A senior Congress politician said, "In Surat, the proposers of the candidate claimed that their signatures were faked. Hence, we are taking precautionary measures to make sure that not only the candidates but their proposers are also signing the nomination forms without leaving any ambiguity."
